Global Mandala

GLOBAL MANDALA

by Sonia Osio

Global Mandala is an international art collaboration, envisioned by Venezuelan American artist Sonia Osio. The project was inspired by her 12 year old grandson, who expressed his worry for the state of the world. She wanted to let him know that there are more people doing good than bad in the world.

Sonia sent blank, multi-sized, multi-textured circles to friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends around the world… asking the simple question: WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR HUMANITY?

To date, people have responded from 64 countries on 12 continents, and 42 states of the US, sending their circle filled with drawings, paintings, poetry, words…

Each circle represents a grain of sand, a seed, a person, a message, and a dream. The entire project is a symbol of the power of love, justice, peace, and global community.  People from all over the world  continue to contribute to this traveling work of art, that is newly envisioned and created, each time it is hosted by a new community.

Global Mandala is much more than a beautiful art piece.  It unites artists, children, spiritual communities, activists and visionaries around the world.  May it inspire a broader exchange of ideas, love, and unity.

Sonia Osio, a Venezuelan artist living in Atlanta, has created the Global Mandala, an amazing work that is traveling the world. The pieces forming the mandala were made by children and adults from all 7 continents and all 50 states. It lived at the Unity North in Marietta in 2017 and again in 2019, but was only able to be up for 5 days because of space considerations. It has traveled to Spain, Italy, Ecuador, and Germany, as well as locations around the US. Each iteration adapts to the space where it is (re)created.

Now Sonia calls the project Global Mandala in Action, creating mandalas with community groups around the world, focusing on issues historical and contemporary, in their communities.
